etymology |
From the Japanese chirigami (ちり紙), meaning "dust paper", which was the low-grade paper made of scraps from the exodermis of the mulberry tree. In Japan, dust paper served as tissue, or toilet, paper until the latter half of the Showa period (1926-1989). |
